Children's Centres and Extended Schools will reduce inequalities but need to be a priority for all

Childcare, Children’s Centres and Extended Schools – Making it Happen A National Conference - Savoy Place, London, 27 June 2006

The children’s services sector needs strategic leadership at every level if it is to deliver the government’s ambitious action plan for children according to a policy conference in London today.

At the 4Children conference Extended Schools and Childcare – Making it Happen leading representatives from local authorities and their strategic partners will highlight the key issues and potential solutions in delivering the government’s new framework for the delivery of integrated children’s centres, childcare and extended schools throughout the country.

The conference comes at a crucial stage in the delivery of major programmes and reforms From central government to leaders in local authorities, the private and voluntary sector, health and education all partners are being charged to work together to make this a key priority.

The conference brings together leading individuals and organisations at the forefront of delivering these reforms – nationally and locally – as well as local authorities and providers who are pioneering these new approaches. Speakers include: Sheila Scales Director of Sure Start, Extended Schools and Families Group, the BBC’s Education and Social Affairs Correspondent Kim Catcheside, Carey Oppenheim consultant for the LGA, Department for Education and Skills and IDeA Implementation Project, Julia Phillips, Head of Early Years and Sure Start at Greenwich Council and Alan Wood from The Learning Trust in Hackney.

Anne Longfield, Chief Executive of 4Children said at the conference: “This is a crucial time in the delivery of reforms for children. With the Children Act moving through parliament, many building blocks are now starting to be put in place but we need strategic leadership partners at the highest levels to make it happen. Local authorities need to ensure that these programmes are a central part of Joint Area Reviews and Children and Young Peoples Plans. Strategic leadership at every level will be crucial if we are to deliver the real changes that children need and deserve.”
